UK Study Visa Requirements for International Students

To obtain a UK Student Visa as an international student, you need to meet several key requirements. These generally include:

1. Acceptance from a Licensed Sponsor:

  • You must have an unconditional offer from a UK university, college, or school that is a licensed student sponsor.
  • This offer will be confirmed by the institution issuing you a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). The CAS is a unique reference number that the university provides, confirming your acceptance and containing details about your course and personal information. You will need the CAS number to apply for your visa.

2. Financial Requirements:

  • You must prove that you have enough money to cover your tuition fees for the first year of your course and your living costs for up to 9 months. The exact amount depends on whether you will be studying in London or outside of London.
    • Outside London: You need to show £1,136 per month for living costs (up to a maximum of 9 months, so £10,224).
    • In London: You need to show £1,483 per month for living costs (up to a maximum of 9 months, so £13,347). London includes the City of London and the 32 London boroughs.
  • Evidence of Funds: The money must have been held in a bank account (either your own, your parent(s)’ or legal guardian’s, or your partner’s under specific conditions) for at least 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before the date of your visa application.
  • Acceptable forms of evidence include bank statements, bank letters, official loan letters, or official financial sponsorship letters.
  • If using a parent’s or legal guardian’s account, you must also provide a letter from them confirming they consent to you using the money and proof of your relationship (e.g., birth certificate, adoption certificate).
  • If you have an official financial sponsor, you need to provide a letter from them confirming the sponsorship and the amount they will cover.
  • If you have already paid a tuition fee deposit, this will be mentioned in your CAS and will reduce the amount of money you need to show for your visa application.

3. English Language Proficiency:

  • You need to prove your ability to speak, read, write, and understand English.
  • Most students will need to take an approved English language test, such as the IELTS for UKVI (International English Language Testing System) or TOEFL iBT. Universities usually have minimum score requirements (e.g., an overall band score of 6 in IELTS is common).
  • Your CAS will confirm how your English language ability has been assessed by the university. If they relied on a specific certificate or qualification you provided, this will be listed in the CAS, and you must include that evidence with your visa application.
  • Students from certain countries may be exempt from providing proof of English proficiency if they have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in a majority English-speaking country.

4. Passport and Travel Documentation:

  • You need a current and valid passport or other travel documentation. Make sure it has a blank page for your visa.

5. Tuberculosis (TB) Test (if applicable):

  • If you are from a country where a TB test is required, you will need to provide the results of a valid TB test from an approved clinic. You do not need to provide this if you have been living in a country for the past six months where the TB test is not required, or if you have been living in the UK for six or more months.

6. Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) Certificate (if applicable):

  • Some postgraduate students studying certain subjects (mainly in science, engineering, technology, and medicine) may need to obtain an ATAS certificate before applying for their visa. Your CAS will indicate if you need one. It’s advisable to apply for this well in advance as it can take about a month to be issued. This does not apply to undergraduate programs.

7. Parental Consent (if under 18):

  • If you are under 18 when you start your studies, you will need to provide a letter of consent from both parents or legal guardians (or one parent if they have sole responsibility). This letter must confirm their consent for your visa application, your living and care arrangements in the UK, and your travel to the UK. You will also need to provide a copy of your birth certificate or another government-issued document showing the names of your parents.

8. Translations:

  • If any of your supporting documents are not in English, you must provide the original document along with a full and certified translation. The translation must include the translator’s name, signature, contact details, and a confirmation that it is an accurate translation of the original document, as well as the date of the translation.

The Application Process:

  1. Accept your offer: Firmly accept your unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor.
  2. Receive your CAS: Once you meet all the conditions of your offer, the university will issue you a CAS.
  3. Prepare your documents: Gather all the required documents mentioned above.
  4. Apply online: Complete the online Student Visa application form on the official UK government website. You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts if applying from outside the UK, or up to 3 months before if applying from inside the UK (before your current visa expires).
  5. Pay the visa fee: The current fee for a Student Visa application from outside the UK is £524.
  6. Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): This fee grants you access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) during your stay. The amount is approximately £800 per year and is usually paid upfront for the total duration of your course.
  7. Attend a biometric appointment: You will need to visit a visa application center to provide your fingerprints and have your photo taken.
  8. Wait for a decision: Visa processing times vary, but it typically takes around 3 weeks for applications from outside the UK and 8 weeks for applications from inside the UK. You may be able to pay for a priority service for a faster decision.
  9. Receive your eVisa: If your application is successful, you will receive an eVisa, which is an online record of your immigration status.
  10. Travel to the UK: You can usually enter the UK up to one week before if your course lasts six months or less, or up to one month before if your course lasts more than six months.

It is crucial to check the latest guidance on the official UK government website (https://www.gov.uk/student-visa) for the most up-to-date information and rules, as these can change. Universities also often provide detailed guidance for their international students on the visa application process.
